We wrapped up last week with the Michigan Music Conference; congratulations to Emily D. and Julian F. on being selected to perform with the All-State Band & Orchestra for this year's conference! A hearty congratulations as well to the Hart MS and SCHS Choirs on performing at this year's conference as well!
This week finds us wrapping up the last week of first semester, and looking ahead to an exciting, music filled second semester! Please read on in this week's update for more details... Composite Pictures: Wednesday, January 25th On Wednesday (1/25), all students in marching band and/or a Concert Ensemble will have their pics taken in both their marching band uniform and concert dress for our bi-annual composite portraits. Band students will have their pictures taken during classes on Wednesday. All colorguard and MB students not enrolled in a band class will need to have their pictures taken either before school, beginning at 7:00 am, or come in during their lunch hour to have their pics taken. If you would like to purchase any of the pictures taken, a flyer with packages is available. This will also be sent home with students on Monday (1/23). If your student is in both MB and a concert ensemble, and you want pictures of your student in both uniforms you will have to purchase two different packages. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Huss at [email protected] or text/call 248-385-6892. Concert Ensembles NYC Trip Meeting: Monday, January 23rd Before we know it, we will be packing and performing at Carnegie Hall! We will be having a trip meeting on Monday, January 23rd at 7pm to review details for the trip, including rooming assignments, as well as the upcoming rehearsal calendar. Please click here for the list of important dates for the trip, or check out the dates on our Google Calendar below, beginning January 2017! *Because this trip and our performance involves students from all three band classes, it is essential for us to hold rehearsals after-school. This enables everyone the opportunity to rehearse with one another without disrupting the learning day by pulling them out of other academic classes. These rehearsals will ensure that we have the best possible performance on one of the world’s most famous stages! Rehearsals were scheduled on Mondays, immediately after-school, in the effort to have the least amount of conflicts with other extra-curricular activities. Please plan accordingly and plan on attending all of our rehearsals. Midterm Exams: January 25th & 26th For those students in Concert Band, the following scales need to be performed from memory in at least one octave: Concert F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb. Students may elect to submit a video or perform them live. The deadline for submission is January 25th (Exam Date). Multiple octaves (winds) or rudiments (percussion) may be performed for extra credit. For Symphony Band and Wind Ensemble students, your short chamber music compositions will be due on your exam date. You must submit both the parts and the score for full credit. More information about your assignment may be found on this information sheet. Instrument Petting Zoo: January 31st Our annual Instrument Petting Zoo for Fifth Graders is quickly approaching! This year's event will be on Tuesday, January 31st from 5-7pm in the band room. We are in need of a few high school students per instrument to help show our fifth graders how to hold different instruments and how to make their first notes. This is a great way to earn extra NHS/Key Club points! Please let Mrs. Staniszewski know if you are available. State Solo & Ensemble Info: If you are a soloist in grades 10-12 performing at State S&E, you will need to prepare a proficiency level to perform along with your solo (scales and sightreading). More information about proficiency levels and scales may be found by clicking here. Large Chamber Ensembles Please stay tuned for a rehearsal schedule- one will be announced in the next few weeks, once musical schedules have been finalized. Upcoming Performances/Events: Jan 23: NYC Trip Meeting January 25-27: Midterm Exams CB: Memorized Scales (Concert F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb) SB & WE: Chamber Music Compositions for Hart MS students to perform January 30: Start of second semester (Jazz Band meets 5-8pm) January 31: Instrument Petting Zoo 5-7pm (Student musicians needed!) February 14: Wind Ensemble to perform at University of Michigan (Field Trip during school day) Marching Band Camp Survey: A note from Mrs. Staniszewski As many of you know, we recently distributed a survey regarding the dates for band camp. The survey was created with the intent of making strides towards eliminating any date conflicts within our school building calendar, by request of Dr. Skedel. Because the fall sports season begins the same week we are currently scheduled for band camp, we are investigating the possibility of moving camp one week earlier. In moving camp one week earlier, we will no longer be in conflict with any building activities at SCHS. Please note: We have not yet officially moved the date for camp. Changing to an earlier week also leaves us in need of a new campsite, as Camp Nissokone is not available any earlier. If we are able to find a campsite, we will proceed with moving camp for this coming August 2017. If we are not able to find a campsite, the dates and location will remain the same for 2017 and we will seek to move for 2018. We recognize that a great number of our students and families participate in many other activities outside of SCHS, particularly Summer Music Theater. Please rest assured that every student wishing to be in the marching band will have the opportunity to do so, and we will continue to provide a memorable, musically enriching and thoroughly enjoyable camp experience for our students. To that end, we are now trying to discover what some of the potential conflicts may be and working together with those families/activities for those students to continue their participation in marching band. If you were one of the families who previously said they could not attend the earlier week, we ask that you help us continue our investigation by please sending an email to [email protected] to specify your conflict and what (if any) sort of flexibility there might be for your student to attend camp, should it be moved one week earlier. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate date conflicts and camp locations. Band camp is one of our largest events of the year, and requires a great deal of planning, attention to detail, and man power to create the positive learning environment we need to start our season. Every effort is being made to find a new location and come to a conclusion on dates in a timely and thorough manner. As soon as conclusions have been reached and confirmed, an announcement will be made for all SCHS Band Families. Jazz Band The Cougar Jazz Band is getting ready to kick off it's first year during second semester-- I hope everyone is as excited as I am! We will begin rehearsing second semester Mondays (Starting Jan 30) from 5-8pm, and Wed/Thur Mornings from 6:15-7:15am. To see the most up-to-date calendar for the Jazz Band, including tentative performances, please reference our Google Calendar below.. Calendar Comments are closed.
