We are half way through our school year already and second semester is upon us, but still have lots to look forward to... Festival, Musical, Spring Concerts, Chamber Music, and much more! Here is this week's update:
Concert Ensembles Large Chamber Ensembles- Brass: Due to musical rehearsals needing to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Large Brass Ensemble will be moving to Mondays after school, 2:45-3:30. We will resume rehearsals on Monday, February 8th up through State Solo & Ensemble on March 19th. After State S&E, we will be having a break from rehearsals due to the musical. Our 2:45-3:30pm rehearsals will resume again on Monday, April 25th, May 9th and 16th as we prepare for our final performance at Rochester Park on Friday, May 20th. Woodwind: You are responsible for keeping up with your parts in the coming months, as we will be performing for our final performance, our Chamber Music Day in Rochester Park on Friday, May 20th. We will resume Tuesday 2:45-3:30pm rehearsals on April 26th, May 3rd, & 17th in order to prepare for our performance. Percussion: Your final performance will be for our Spring Concert on May 11th. James will be updating you as to when your rehearsals will resume to prepare you for that performance. MSBOA BAND FESTIVAL DATES ANNOUNCED:

Pit Orchestra Pit Orchestra personnel will be announced in the coming days! Please stay tuned to the band room for the posting. All pit orchestra musicians will need to copy their books into a 3 ring binder and return their contracts on or before our first rehearsal on February 16th, 2016. Calendar Please check out our Google Calendar for all the latest updates on rehearsals, performances, and events! We had another BIG week of great moments for SCHS Band students this week! Congratulations to Emily D., Julian F., Madeline B., Christina I., Kristina R., Annica S., and Morgan Z. on their performing at the Michigan Music Conference this past weekend! We also had a great trip to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra last night- a big thank you to Mrs. Irons for coordinating this awesome opportunity for us!
Ahead for this week we have our Instrument Petting Zoo and final exams/projects in all band classes. Rehearsals will resume again in February. Stay tuned for further announcements regarding a pending schedule of rehearsals. Large Brass Ensemble will be performing at State S&E in March. Instrument Petting Zoo- Tuesday, January 26, 2016: STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We will be hosting our annual Instrument Petting Zoo for 5th graders on Tuesday, January 26th from 5-7pm in the SCHS Band Room. For this event, we are in need of upperclassmen student volunteers to help show our 5th graders how to hold each instrument and make a sound. We only have one volunteer at this point, and need about 2 per instrument in order for this event to be effective! If you are interested in helping out for this event, please let Mrs. Staniszewski know! Midterm Exams:

It was a big week for SCHS Band students this past week with many successful performances! Congratulations to our brass quintet who performed for the district's MLK Celebration as well as all our student musicians who performed at District 4 Solo & Ensemble this past weekend at Hartland! The work you have put into your chamber works will certainly continue to carry you on to greater growth and opportunity!
We have another great music filled week ahead! Here is this week's update: Concert Ensembles State Solo & Ensemble Festival- Congratulations to ALL our participants in District 4 Solo & Ensemble this weekend! If your event earned a "I" rating, you are automatically invited to perform again at State Solo & Ensemble to be held right here at SCHS on Saturday, March 19th. All qualifying events are highly encouraged to perform! Proficiency Information for 10th-12th Gr Soloists Registration Forms (DUE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20th!) Music Booster Meeting- Monday, January 11, 2016, 7pm There is a VERY important Booster Meeting coming up this Monday for all parents involved in our music programs here at SCHS. Please considering attending this important meeting, as our Student Ledger Program will be introduced! This new program is intended to help ease the financial burden for all students involved in band and choir here at SCHS. Come hear about this exciting new program, as well as have the chance to ask any questions you may have about how this can benefit you/your student. Concert Ensembles Congratulations to Ishpreet K. on being selected and performing with the District 4 MSBOA Honors Band this past weekend! Large Chamber Ensembles- All large chamber groups will rehearse this week at their respective times. We are down to our last rehearsals before Solo & Ensemble! MLK Performance- Thursday, Jan. 14th at 6:30pm at Rochester HS Auditorium Upon special request from our administrators in RCS, one of our own SCHS Brass Ensembles (Aiden K., Ryan G., Ishpreet K., Matt V., and Lauren I.) was invited to perform for the Rochester Community School's MLK Day Event! A Beacon on Hope is the theme for this year’s annual district celebration which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 14, from 6:30-7:45 p.m. at the Rochester High School Auditorium, Scheduled attendees include City of Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett, City of Rochester Mayor Cathy Daldin, and Oakland Township Supervisor Terry Gonser. Come and listen to our own brass perform Abide With Me for this very special celebration. Admission is free. District 4 MSBOA Solo & Ensemble- Friday, Jan. 15 and Sat, Jan 16, 2016 at Hartland HS Solo & Ensemble is quickly approaching! A very Happy New Year to all our SCHS Band Families! I hope everyone has had a restful, rejuvenating holiday break! We hit the ground running this week with our S&E Clinics on Thursday and District S&E is right around the corner. Here is this week's update:
Concert Ensembles Large Chamber Ensembles- All large chamber groups will rehearse this week at their respective times. We are down to our last couple rehearsals before Solo & Ensemble! Google Classroom- Please be sure you update and submit all your Google Classroom assignments ASAP! Solo & Ensemble Clinics- Thursday, January 7th, 2016: Our annual S&E Clinics will be held after school on Thursday, January 7th. ALL EVENTS PARTICIPATING IN S&E NEED TO SIGN-UP TO PERFORM ON THIS AFTERNOON (with the exception of the large chamber ensembles). Each event will need to sign up for a time slot, i.e. if you are performing in a solo and a small chamber group, you will need to sign up for two different time slots. Time slots will be available from 3:00-6:30pm, and sign-up sheets/time slots will be posted upon our return from Winter Break. Here are a few reminders going into this important event:
Also, any student group wishing to be considered to perform at the Michigan Music Conference will need to express their interest to Mrs. Staniszewski prior to our S&E Clinics on Thursday, January 7th. Student group(s) selected to perform will be excused from school on Friday, Jan 22nd, and are invited to explore the rest of the conference, including all exhibits and performances, as a participant. This conference is the premier, state wide Music Education conference for Michigan; it is a huge honor to attend and perform! Please also note: student groups selected to perform (and their parents) may find it helpful to secure a hotel room for Thursday night if they do not wish to drive out to Grand Rapids early on Friday morning. (The performance is scheduled for 11am on Friday.) Unfortunately, there is no reimbursement available for hotel/driving costs. Please feel free to ask Mrs. Staniszewski any questions.
