Here's to a fulfilling completion of our jazz season! Concert Ensembles Spring Concert: Wednesday, May 4th The timeline for this performance can be found here. LAST CALL: 2022-2023 Wind Ensemble Auditions If you/your student was not able to schedule your Wind Ensemble audition last week, please reach out to Mrs. Staniszewski to schedule a time ASAP. Audition results will be posted once auditions have been completed. Chamber Music Night: Monday, May 16, 2022 Our annual Chamber Music Night with Hart MS returns on Monday, May 16th from 5-8:30pm! All SCHS Band students are required to perform at least once this evening. If performing in multiple events, they may choose which event to perform. The SCHS Cougar Jazz Band will finish with their final performance of the year and end the evening at 8:00pm. This has always been a great event in the past-- bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks to The Hill outside the band room and enjoy! Students can sign up for their performance times using this sign-up. Cougar Marching Band Percussion Workshops Our last percussion workshop will be on Thursday, May 5 at 2:30pm. Good luck to those auditioning for drumline! Section Leader, Captain, and Drum Major Interviews/Auditions Those interested in joining the leadership team (Drum Majors, Captains, and Section Leaders) for the Fall 2022 Cougar Marching Band will need to complete an application and interview/audition process. Interviews for interested candidates will be held Monday, May 2 and 9, 2:30-5:00pm. CMB Leadership Handbook (Candidates should review prior to applying.) Applications/Essay Prompt for CMB Leadership Positions (Hard copy must be submitted at least 24 Hrs prior to scheduled interview.) Sign-Up for Interview Times Here Band Registration & MB Fittings: Check your e-mail and mark your Calendars: Online marching band registration (school year 2022-2023) will be released in mid-May. Uniform and shoe fitting is scheduled for the evening of May 23rd. Mini Band Camp: June 8-10, 2022 (11am-4pm) Mini Marching Band Camp will be June 8-10, immediately after each AM half day of school. A lunch break will be provided for students prior to our mini-camp activities beginning each day. A parent meeting is tentatively planned for June 9th in the evening (time: TBD). The first marching band performance will be on Friday, June 10th, after mini-camp at Jimmy John Field. Tickets will be on sale at registration. Leadership Council Our next leadership meeting will be on Monday, May 23rd, just prior to our MB Registration/Fitting night. All are welcome, and Leadership Team Members for the 2022-23 Cougar MB are required to attend. The Outreach Committee is working on assembling a Pep Band for Spring Sports as well as a number of Memorial Day performance opportunities. Music Boosters Announcements Parent Support for Next Year's Marching Band A successful season for next year starts today! Help is needed to fill some critical positions looking ahead for Fall 2022. Old Band Items (This is for Seniors or Children who have grown a lot): Do you have an old marching band polo, shoes, spirit wear, etc you no longer want, but someone else might be able to use? Starting Monday, April 18th there will be a box in the band room for used band/marching band items that could be used by new/returning marching band members. This is a way to try to defray some of the costs. Extra Music Opportunities Central Michigan University Instrument Workshops The CMU Instrumental Workshop is Back! Join us on Monday, May 9th for a full day of instrument-specific clinics and large sessions with topics that apply to all instrumentalists. Attendees will work directly with CMU School of Music Faculty. All high school students are welcome! The fee for this event is $25 per student. Space is limited so register now! Registration Deadline: Sunday, May 1, 2022 Spartan Youth Wind Symphony The audition submission window for SYWS 2022-2023 is now open; auditions will again be submitted online. Since its beginnings in the fall of 2009, SYWS has grown to become an incredible opportunity and community for students- this is a great opportunity for high school wind and percussion players to extend their skills and work with some of the talent at the Michigan State University School of Music! Detroit Metropolitan Youth Symphony Seeking Musicians The DMYS is holding open auditions for students seeking an advanced youth ensemble experience. Detroit MYS is a supplement to the school music program and provides additional guidance and challenge for the advancing music student in grades 2-12. Our exceptional orchestra was recently recognized nationally in the American Prize competition! All groups rehearse Saturday mornings at Berkshire Middle School and perform three concerts each season, including:
Travel Update: Orlando/Walt Disney World for February 2023 Our next travel opportunity for the SCHS Bands has been announced: mark your calendars for February 16-21 2023, as we look to perform at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida! We have a big Jazz Band performance this week at Music Hall in Detroit, along with a short month ahead before a busy Spring Concert season in May. Preparations for the Fall are also getting underway with Leadership Interviews and Percussion Workshops for the Cougar Marching Band and Wind Ensemble Auditions coming up. All the details for the coming week and weeks to come are here in this week's Update: Jazz Band The Cougar Jazz Band next meets on Monday, April 11th from 5-8pm, as we welcome Jesse Elder from Postmodern Jukebox to play with us in preparation for our BIG performance on Tuesday, April 12th at Music Hall! For this special performance, we will be performing along side the Adams and Rochester HS Jazz Bands, and the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra. We will also be world premiering Jesse's big band arrangement of Pink Floyd's "Money" for this event -- be sure to invite all your friends and family for a night of memorable music in an incredible venue! The timeline for this event can be found here. There is a $20/person cover charge for this performance. Student performers will not need to pay the cover fee. Alumni interested in joining us should plan on attending rehearsal on Monday, April 11 at 5pm, SCHS Band room to rehearse with Jesse prior to Tuesday's performance.
