I hope everyone had a restful, safe Thanksgiving holiday break! We have an exciting couple weeks in our band classes, looking ahead to our Winter Livestream on Wednesday, December 16th. Here's what's going on in the Band Room this week and beyond... Individual Check-Ins: Monday, Nov 30 & Tues, Dec. 1 For our classes on Monday, Nov. 30 (CB & SB) and Tuesday, Dec. 1 (WE), we will NOT be meeting as a full group. Instead, each student will need to sign up for one individual check-in time with myself or Ms. Williamson. To receive credit for this assignment and their attendance, students are responsible for signing up AND attending one check-in time, and will need to sign-up for a time when they are able to play their instrument from home. (We will be playing their parts for Sleigh Ride during their session.) Additional details are available in our Google Classroom. Students can click here to sign-up for their check-in. Band Class Assignments All students are currently working on contributions to our Winter Performance Livestream, to be held on Wednesday, December 16th at 7pm. Concert ensemble students are working on two contributions: an individual or small group contribution as well as creating a video recording of Sleigh Ride. Jazz band students are also creating a video of a selection to be featured. Students are also working on chamber compositions (CB, SB, WE), Jazz solo transcriptions (JB), and our new Primary Instrument Work Unit on excerpts. Calling All SCHS Band Alumni & Family Members for some Sleigh Ride fun! Band Class Assignments A new Primary Instrument Work Unit was introduced this past week, focusing on some new territory for our students: Orchestral and Wind Band excerpts! Be sure to ask your student which excerpts they picked and have them play their choices for you! Our Composition Projects to create short chamber pieces for our middle school musicians at Hart MS is well underway. At this point, each student should be starting on their compositions. We will be continuing to work on these throughout the coming weeks before sending them over to the Hart MS bands to work on during second semester. This past week, each ensemble had discussions regarding reinventing performances; finding ways for us to share our progress, work, and artistry with others. There were a LOT of great ideas! We will be investigating what options are available in the coming days, with the intent of sharing a collaborative collection of our music with families and friends in the coming weeks. Next week, we will be holding another Virtual Music Conference during all Concert Ensemble classes. New sessions on non-traditional composition, music technology, music history, and more will all be available for students to choose from for our classes on Monday, Nov 23 and Tuesday, Nov 24th. Per tradition, we will once again be studying and playing Sleigh Ride. Students should be working on their parts at home and be prepared to turn in a video of their playing by December 2, 2020. More details can be found on the assignment page in our Google Classrooms. Calling All SCHS Band Alumni & Family Members for some Sleigh Ride fun! If you are a family member who plays an instrument and/or SCHS Band alumni interested in participating in an upcoming collaboration with the SCHS Bands and this piece, please e-mail Mrs. Staniszewski for details! We would love to get as many alumni, family and friends of the SCHS Bands as we can get! Here's what's going on in the Band Room this week and beyond... Materials for Band Classes As we embark on a new card marking this week, we will also be starting a few new units and activities. These are the things students will need to have to participate most fully in our band classes: Students will need to have their primary band instrument/equipment and sheet music for each of our classes moving forward. Lockers are available to store instruments only during classes they are not in band, however, instruments MUST be taken home at the end of the day and only instruments may be stored in lockers. (See our In-Person reminders below for additional details.) During our Wednesday zoom sessions, we will be kicking off our Midterm Composition Unit (Composing chamber music for our Hart MS musicians). Students are asked to bring their chromebook, personal device, and/or blank staff paper so they can begin working on their compositions during in-class sessions. We will also begin doing regular rhythm work during all in-person sessions. Students are invited to bring in a "rhythm" instrument if they wish to keep things interesting for our rhythms studies. This can be a toy drum, tambourine, woodblock, maracas, sticks, bucket, string instrument; anything that is not a wind instrument. If a student doesn't wish to bring in anything extra, they are welcome to also simply clap these rhythms as well. Lastly, our Primary Instrument Work Unit 2 Final Performance will be due next Wednesday, November 10th, along with starting a new Primary Instrument Work Unit on Orchestral Excerpts. More information on this unit will be given next week. Pep Band Opportunity: Friday, November 6, 2020 There is a possibility that our pep band & guard may have the opportunity to participate in this Friday's home playoff football game. This opportunity is completely voluntary. No SCHS Band, Drumline, or Guard members are required to participate in this event. A rehearsal for musicians will be held at 5:30PM behind the band room. If you choose to participate in this event, you MUST agree to abide by all safety regulations during both the rehearsal and football game AND commit to attending both the rehearsal and full game. If we are cleared, interested students must have parental consent and complete the form below. Spots will be filled according to class seniority & performance/instrumentation needs. Students cleared to participate will be notified by November 5th or earlier. Tickets for this game will be sold online and may be limited based on health and MHSAA guidelines. There are no available free tickets for participants, however, students participating will not need to pay for admission.
