Friday, January 15th, 2016 Saturday, January 16th, 2016 The last week, and last Weekly Update, for 2015 is upon us! This week's Update is packed with lots of important information, both for this week as well as for events coming up for our return in January. Without further ado, here is this week's Update:
CONCERT ENSEMBLES/BAND CLASSES Winter Concert- Tuesday, December 15th: Our last major performance of the calendar year is here! As in the past, we will be performing two pieces as a combined program for the end of our concert. In order to perform successfully, all band students will need to attend our dress rehearsal. The dress rehearsal will be held the day of the concert, Tuesday 12/15, at 5:30pm. It will be very important for us to have this additional rehearsal in order to make sure we have our seating configuration on the stage ready to go, as well as to run through both pieces with Dr. Skedel prior to performing. Doors to the public will open after the dress rehearsal has finished, and the concert will begin at 7:00pm. Blue Lake FIne Arts Camp Auditions- Wednesday, December 16th: A representative from BLFAC will be holding scholarship auditions during all three band classes this Wednesday. Blue Lake is a 2-week arts camp held in Twin Lakes, MI that provides some fantastic learning opportunities and performing experiences for students! We have had many students from SCHS attend Blue Lake in the past, as well as participate in their International Exchange/Tour program. Any student interested in auditioning for a scholarship should be prepared to play 1-2 scales as well as an excerpt that demonstrates their best playing. The excerpt does not need to be a solo; it could be a part from our band folders or a piece of chamber music as well. There is no commitment to attend BLFAC by auditioning, so all students are highly encouraged to audition, even if just to see how much scholarship money they are awarded. More information on BLFAC can be found on their website. Yearbook Pictures- Thursday, December 17th: Mrs. Steen will be visiting all SCHS Band and Choir classes on Thursday in order to take our yearbook pictures. All students will need to make sure they have their concert dress, as well as black shoes and socks, on this day! Large Chamber Ensembles- All large chamber groups will rehearse this week at their respective times. Google Classroom- Please be sure you update and submit all your Google Classroom assignments ASAP! ---Winter Break--- Solo & Ensemble Clinics- Thursday, January 7th, 2016: Our annual S&E Clinics will be held after school on Thursday, January 7th. ALL STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN S&E NEED TO SIGN-UP TO PERFORM ON THIS AFTERNOON. Each event will need to sign up for a time slot, i.e. if you are performing in a solo and a small chamber group, you will need to sign up for two different time slots. Time slots will be available from 3:00-6:30pm, and sign-up sheets/time slots will be posted upon our return from Winter Break. Also, any student group wishing to be considered to perform at the Michigan Music Conference will need to express their interest to Mrs. Staniszewski prior to our S&E Clinics on Thursday, January 7th. Student group(s) selected to perform will be excused from school on Friday, Jan 22nd, and are invited to explore the rest of the conference, including all exhibits and performances, as a participant. This conference is the premier, state wide Music Education conference for Michigan; it is a huge honor to attend and perform! Please also note: student groups selected to perform (and their parents) may find it helpful to secure a hotel room for Thursday night if they do not wish to drive out to Grand Rapids early on Friday morning. (The performance is scheduled for 11am on Friday.) Unfortunately, there is no reimbursement available for hotel/driving costs. Please feel free to ask Mrs. Staniszewski any questions. Upcoming Events
