A big congratulations to Jihyo Y. for being honored by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association as an Outstanding Soloist at MSBOA State Solo & Ensemble Festival this past weekend! Jihyo was recognized as one of the best high school flute players across the state of Michigan and has been invited to the Outstanding Soloist Competition at Eastern Michigan University coming up in April. Congratulations and Good Luck! Spring Band Concert Our Spring Concert is coming up on Wednesday, May 1st! Students will need to report at 5:30 pm for a brief combined band rehearsal. Concert dress for this performance is our Concert Blacks. Students will also need to bring a nut-free goodie to share at our Afterglow. Doors will open at 6:30pm, and the concert will begin at 7pm. We hope you can join us for a great evening of live music! Band Banquet: Thursday, May 9th This year's Band Banquet will be taking place on Thursday, May 9th at Twin Lakes Golf Course. Doors open at 5:30pm along with prelude music from our Cougar Jazz Band, prior to dinner being served and our annual awards presentation and celebration of our seniors. Freshmen who marched will receive their varsity letter, our seniors are presented with Graduation Honors Cords (concert ensemble for 4 years), our plaque awards are presented, and much more! In partnership with Dr. Lamb and the OU Percussion Studio, Adams will be hosting the first RCS Percussion Festival on Saturday, May 11th from 12-6pm. It will feature performances from Dr. Lamb, OU percussionists and RCS percussion ensembles and soloists. The day will include a performance showcase from Dr. Lamb, OU students & alumni, and our RCS Percussion coaches, a masterclass of OU percussionists performing solos and ensemble pieces, and an interactive clinic from Dr. Lamb and move into a solo/ensemble masterclass for RCS students. Because of the size and breadth of this event, all SCHS Band and Orchestra parents and students (whether or not they are performing) need to volunteer for this event to be a successful one. Here's everything we have going on in the band room for this week, next week, and the weeks ahead: Detroit Symphony Orchestra Field Trip: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2024 We have an exciting invitation for a field trip to the DSO- Orchestra Hall to enjoy a classical music concert, Elgar and Sheherazade, featuring Mendelsson’s Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor and Sherherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov. Tickets are $27.00 and include the concert ticket and transportation. Please fill out the ticket worksheet and permission slip and return to the black mailbox ASAP to reserve your seat! Extended deadline due to snow days! Parent chaperones are encouraged to attend as we are in need of you! If you are interested in chaperoning please fill out your information as well as your student. Solo & Ensemble: Saturday, February 3 Good luck to all our performers heading to Rochester HS this Saturday for District Solo & Ensemble! Be sure to arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled performance time to allow for time to find your section and warm-up. Students who earn a "I" at this festival will be automatically invited to perform at State Solo & Ensemble at Stoney Creek HS on Saturday, March 16! 2/3/2024 District S&E Schedule at Rochester HS Pre-Festival Concerts: Feb 14 (CB&SB) & Feb 15 (WE) Our next set of performances will be on February 14th (Concert Band and Symphony Band) and February 15th (Wind Ensemble) for our Pre-Festival Concerts! Please make sure your calendars are marked. For our February 14th concert, we will be hosting an afterglow for our Hart 8th Grade Bands, so please be sure to also bring a nut-free goodie to share! Cougar Jazz Band Our next rehearsal is Monday, January 29th from 5-8pm. Our Jazz Band students will be having a clinic with bassist MSgt Eric Sabo from the President's Own United States Marine Corp Band on Monday, February 5th! We are very excited to have MSgt Sabo talk to and work with our jazz students on improvisation and jazz skills during our evening rehearsal that night. Parents are welcome to come sit in on this clinic if they wish- please email Mrs. Staniszewski to RSVP. Our Jazz Retreat will be held on February 9-11, 2024. We will be at the Embassy Suites in Troy again for a great weekend of clinics, music, and fun. Students should plan to arrive between 4:30-5:00pm to check in. Student Leadership Meetings Our next leadership meeting will be Monday, February 26th at 4pm! Leadership Meetings dates for the rest of this year will be: April 8th (2:30pm), May 6th (4:00pm), and June 3rd (2:30pm). Students, please mark your calendars- we'd love to have your voice in the meetings! The student leadership teams have been busy working on projects for the band program! We hope you can join us for some of these new events: The Outreach Committee is putting together a performance opportunity for small groups and combos. More information will come as details are finalized! Our Publicity and Social Committees are working with our SCHS Music Boosters to host our first ever Music Department Bowling Night on Tuesday, March 19th at Avon North Hill Lanes. Cost is $5/person and includes bowling, shoes, and pizza. At least one person per lane needs to be an adult. Registration forms can be seen/printed here. Money and registration forms are due March 8th, 2024 and can be turned in to the black mailbox outside the band or choir office doors. This event is open to ALL Music Department families-- Band, Choir, Orchestra, Color/Winterguard! We hope you will join us! Extra-Curricular Opportunities Michigan Youth Ensembles Applications for the 2024-2025 Michigan Youth Ensemble (MYE) Season are now open! All MYE Programs are open to students who will be in grades 9 through 12 during the 2024-2025 academic year. Social Studies Olympiad: Song Writing Stoney Creek High School will be competing in the Social Studies Olympiad this year, and one of the events is to create an original song! Concert Ensembles (CB, SB, WE) Chamber Music Composition Assignment We are wrapping up our Composition Projects as first semester comes to a close. These projects are worth 20% of our semester grade. Final copies and recordings are due on the day of each student's exam period. After receiving all final editions, they will be sent over to our Hart MS band friends to be performed later this year at our Chamber Music Night in May!
