SCHS Music Booster Scholarships: February 18th, 2020 The SCHS Music Boosters will once again be holding auditions for $1000 in scholarships specifically for SCHS Band students. To be eligible, a student must be enrolled in a band class for the 2020-2021 school year. More information can be found by clicking here. Scholarship auditions will be held the evening of February 18th, 2020; letters of intent are due by Monday, February 10th, 2020. Available time slots for auditions are posted on the band room door. Concert Ensembles (Concert Band, Symphony Band, Wind Ensemble) District Solo & Ensemble: February 1 (all other events) Our District Solo & Ensemble Schedules are now available! Please be sure to make a note of your time and section number. All events will be held at Rochester High School. The SCHS Bands will be traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii in 2021. Any student enrolled in a concert ensemble class (Concert Band, Symphony Band, Wind Ensemble) is invited to travel with us. Activities include a clinic with instructors at the University of Hawaii, performing at both the USS Arizona Memorial and Ala Moana Center, along with visiting multiple cultural sites and experiences. Our first trip introduction meeting will be held on Monday, February 3rd at 7:30pm in the band room. Students and/or parents are welcome to attend. We hope you can come! If you are not able to attend but are still interested in traveling, all travel documents distributed at the meeting will be posted electronically on our website after the meeting has taken place. Please note, space on this trip will be limited; the best way to guarantee travel is to register early! Jazz Band Jazz Band rehearsals will officially begin THIS Monday evening, January 27th from 5:30-8:30pm, and Wednesday & Thursday Mornings from 6:15-7:15am. Our syllabus and calendar dates can be found by clicking here. The Jazz Band Yearbook picture will be taken at our Thursday AM rehearsal on January 30th. All students will need to bring their black concert dress and will be supplied with our Jazz Band accessories for the picture. Jesse will be performing with PMJ on tour at the Fillmore in Detroit on Friday, March 20th! Fundraising Buffalo Wild Wings Night: Wednesday, January 29th, 2020 We have a fundraising night scheduled for Monday January 27th at Buffalo Wild Wings! Forget doing dishes or cooking! When you dine at the Buffalo Wild Wings at 1234 Walton Rd, 20% percent of your check will come back to the SCHS Music boosters. Simply show this flier to your server to help support our Music Boosters and all the enrichment activities they provide for our students. Panera Bread: Saturday, February 15, 2020 We also have a fundrasing night scheduled at Panera Bread from 4-8pm on Saturday, February 15th at the South Livernois location! Extra-Curricular Performance Opportunities Take 2 Symphony The Take 2 Symphony is a student based performance ensemble based out of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The symphony is open to all students in grades 9-12. Participating students will have the opportunity to learn and perform some of the most iconic TV, film, and video game music from Star Wars to The Legend of Zelda. Take 2 Symphony’s first rehearsal on February 3rd quickly approaching, and they are looking for you! Specifically, they are in need of the following instruments before their first rehearsal on Monday, February 3rd (7-9pm at Bloomfield Hills HS):
The audition consists only of a pre-selected 16-20 measures from one of our pieces this concert cycle. There will be no scales or sight-reading, and the audition will take place in a practice room during the first rehearsal. The audition is very low-stress, and is nothing students should be worried about. CMU Double Reed Day CMU Double Reed professors Lindabeth Binkley (oboe) and MaryBeth Minnis (bassoon) are hosting a CMU Double Reed Day! Thursday, January 30; 10 AM- 5PM Featuring special guests Christa Garvey, Professor of Oboe at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Cindy Duda, Bassoon Instructor at Saginaw Valley State University, this fast-paced day will feature master classes, special topic sessions, double reed ensemble, and reed making instruction for new and experienced reed makers. From beginner to advanced, we welcome all double reed students to join us! CMU music education majors and double reed students will assist us and work with our younger participants. We are particularly excited to invite any students interested in switching from another instrument to oboe or bassoon. Send them with an instrument and we will get them started for you! These students will spend the morning learning the fundamentals and explore a variety of topics in the afternoon. CMU Double Reed Day will conclude with a final concert (4:00 PM) featuring our CMU Double Reed Day Ensemble (including our switchers!) and our Guest Artists. Participants may also attend the Rebels & Rulebreakers Concert featuring Prof. Minnis, Dr. Binkley, and other School of Music Faculty at 7:30 PM in Staples Family Concert Hall free of charge. Concert Band students need to perform all twelve major scales, one octave, from memory. Students may choose to perform these live or video record themselves (must be done in one take, not edited). Concert Ensembles (Concert Band, Symphony Band, Wind Ensemble) Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Scholarship Auditions: Thursday, January 9, 2020 A representative from Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp will in all classes on Thursday, January 9th to hold open auditions for scholarships. Auditioning for a scholarship is not a commitment to attending the camp; BLFAC will mail you a scholarship offer 2-3 weeks after the audition, at which time you can choose to accept or decline. Auditioning students need only prepare a short excerpt of music of their choosing that demonstrates their best playing. All students are highly encouraged to audition, even if they do not choose to go to the camp! Jazz Band Our SCHS Jazz Band Retreat will be held on the afternoon of Friday, January 10, 2020 through Sunday morning, January 12, 2020 at the Embassy Suites in Troy. Particularly exciting this year is our partnership with professional jazz pianist and Postmodern Jukebox member, Jesse Elder! Mr. Elder will be composing a brand new song arrangement for this year's Cougar Jazz Band, as well as flying in from NYC to work with us throughout the semester.
