The first semester is coming to a close! Here are all the details for what's going on in the Band Room this week and the weeks to come:
Concert Ensembles (Concert Band, Symphony Band, Wind Ensemble) Midterm Assignments/Projects Symphony Band & Wind Ensemble students will be composing a short piece of chamber music to be performed by Hart MS students for our Chamber Music Night in May. More information can be found by clicking here. All compositions (PDFs and Audio files) must be submitted electronically by Wednesday, January 22nd, 2020. Concert Band students need to perform all twelve major scales, one octave, from memory. Students may choose to perform these live or video record themselves (must be done in one take, not edited). Videos or live performances must be completed & received by Thursday, January 23rd, 2020. District Solo & Ensemble: January 25 (Lg Ens.) & February 1 (all other events) Our District Solo & Ensemble Schedules are now available! Please be sure to make a note of your time and section number. All events will be held at Rochester High School. Students are advised to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to allow time to locate your section and warm-up. Our syllabus and calendar dates can be found by clicking here. The Jazz Band Yearbook picture will be taken at our Thursday AM rehearsal on January 30th. All students will need to bring their black concert dress and will be supplied with our Jazz Band accessories for the picture. Marching Band Volunteering: We need YOU! The Marching Band season may be coming to a close, but we are already looking ahead to Band Camp 2020! Please see our Volunteering page to sign up for one of our committees! Leadership Meetings These meetings are open to ALL SCHS Band members who wish to attend. Those interested in a section leader or drum major position in the Cougar MB need to attend, as your attendance will be noted as a part of the application process in the spring. Buffalo Wild Wings Night: Wednesday, January 29th, 2020 We have a fundraising night scheduled for Monday January 27th at Buffalo Wild Wings! Forget doing dishes or cooking! When you dine at the Buffalo Wild Wings at 1234 Walton Rd, 20% percent of your check will come back to the SCHS Music boosters. Simply show this flier to your server to help support our Music Boosters and all the enrichment activities they provide for our students. (Flyer needs to be shown, printed or from a phone, at the restaurant.) Extra-Curricular Performance Opportunities CMU Double Reed Day CMU Double Reed professors Lindabeth Binkley (oboe) and MaryBeth Minnis (bassoon) are hosting a CMU Double Reed Day! Thursday, January 30; 10 AM- 5PM Featuring special guests Christa Garvey, Professor of Oboe at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Cindy Duda, Bassoon Instructor at Saginaw Valley State University, this fast-paced day will feature master classes, special topic sessions, double reed ensemble, and reed making instruction for new and experienced reed makers. From beginner to advanced, we welcome all double reed students to join us! CMU music education majors and double reed students will assist us and work with our younger participants. We are particularly excited to invite any students interested in switching from another instrument to oboe or bassoon. Send them with an instrument and we will get them started for you! These students will spend the morning learning the fundamentals and explore a variety of topics in the afternoon. CMU Double Reed Day will conclude with a final concert (4:00 PM) featuring our CMU Double Reed Day Ensemble (including our switchers!) and our Guest Artists. Participants may also attend the Rebels & Rulebreakers Concert featuring Prof. Minnis, Dr. Binkley, and other School of Music Faculty at 7:30 PM in Staples Family Concert Hall free of charge. Oboists and bassoonists interested in auditioning for admission to the School of Music for the Fall 2020 semester may also do so on CMU Double Reed Day. Cost to Attend
North Oakland Concert Band Concerto Competition The seventh annual NOCB Concerto Competition auditions will be held February 20, 2020 at Lake Orion High School. The winner will receive $1,000 and will perform with the band during their spring concert at the Lake Orion High School Auditorium in Lake Orion, MI. Students who wish to apply must meet the following criteria:
