We have another busy week in the band room! Here is this week’s update...
Concert Ensembles We will be having a chamber music day on Friday, Sept. 29th. All students will need to have music to work independent or in their chamber groups on this day! If you signed up for a large ensemble and do not yet have music, you will need to spend your time working independently/practicing in small groups on our fall concert selections. Portfolio students will be responsible for a journal entry on this day. Our first few assignments should be showing up in your Synergy Student/ParentVUE. If your student has not yet completed them, our first assignments for the year are to... 1) Complete the Beginning of the Year Google Form (click here for form). The link to this form can also be found on the documents section of our website, should your student not have completed it during the first day of school. This BOY Form includes our locker check out Form, Chamber Music Project selection Form, and Community Service lessons Form. Please note: students wishing to use a band locker are responsible for having their own lock. 2) Return the signed syllabus Form. Extra copies of each band's syllabus can be found also on the documents section of our website. A special word about our Community Service Lessons Program: This annual partnership with the Hart MS provides a great service for our younger band students, as well as a great volunteer opportunity for our SCHS students needing community service hours for NHS, Key Club, etc. Our Hart MS band family is growing (close to 300 band students this year!) and we need as many Community Service HS mentors as possible! I sincerely hope every SCHS band student will consider volunteering to help one of our Hart MS band students once a week for 30 minutes! Marching Band A big THANK YOU to our 5th grade guest artists for joining us on the Star-Spangled Banner at this past Friday’s football game! We also need to thank all our parent volunteers for helping us with senior pictures and water/apples for the game- it certainly was a hot one! But with our collective efforts, we had fantastic performances all around and can look forward to another great week of rehearsals and performances... This performance will provide an opportunity for our ensemble to receive exceptionally high quality feedback from six different adjudicators on the execution of our show. Feedback is given both individually and at-large on three different categories: music performance, marching, and general effect. Receiving this feedback will prove priceless prior to our performing for Band Festival on October 12th, making this one of our most significant performances of our season. It will be an AWESOME night of marching band! Please Note: Busses will be provided to our performance, however there will be no busses back to SCHS. Students will need transportation home from this event. We also will be changing out of uniforms at LOHS after we are done performing. Students will need to bring a change of clothes with them to this performance. Ticket Information: Students will not need a ticket. Their hands will be stamped to make sure that they get back in for free. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for students and seniors, and $25 for a family ticket (two parents plus all children). The other bands participating in this Invitational are all a part of the Michigan Competing Band Association, or MCBA. Although we are attending as an Open Class band and are not competing, it is highly encouraged that anyone who is able stays to watch at least a few of the other bands performing for this show once our performance is complete. Some of the ensembles performing are regarded as the top marching bands in the state within this competitive circuit! Opportunities The 2017 Oakland University Honor Band will be held November 17-18. Dr. Emily Threinen, Director of Bands, University of Minnesota, will be serving as the special guest clinician this year. Last year, the OU Honor Band had students from 43 Michigan high schools participate in the band and they are looking forward another outstanding event this year. If you are interested in participating in this great event, please let Mrs. Staniszewski know by Friday, Sept. 29th. The 2018 MSBOA All-District Honors Band will be held on January 12-13, 2018 at Clarkston HS. This year, there will be two different honors bands in order to accommodate the demand and include more students. Students particating will have the chance to work with highly acclaimed collegiate and high school band directors and work with highly skilled students from throughout our MSBOA District 4. There is a $60 partication fee if selected, which includes all fees, t-shirt, as well as some meals during the rehearsal days. All SCHS students are highly encouraged to participate! Any student wishing to participate in this awesome experience needs to let Mrs. Staniszewski know by Friday, October 13, 2017. Comments are closed.
