A hearty congratulations to all our student musicians-- what a great week of concerts for band classes and our final home game for the Cougar MB! Bravo to all! As we look ahead at the coming week, we begin to settle in and prepare for our winter season. Here is all the information you need as we look ahead in this week's update:
Concert Ensembles Solo & Ensemble Registration: S/E registration deadline is THIS WEDNESDAY! Those students who elected to participate in Solo & Ensemble will need to make sure they turn in their registration forms and fees! (Forms can be found here.) Please turn in only ONE form and ONE payment per event. Each form and payment needs to be enclosed in a labeled envelope and submitted to Mr. DeRubeis in the band office no later than October 26th! Large Chamber Ensembles: If you have not already done so, please be sure to pick up your parts from Mr. DeRubeis, as well as pay your $7 registration fee to Ishpreet K. Large Percussion Ensemble will be rehearsing Fridays after school with James, beginning Friday, November 4th. If you are in one of the large WW or brass choirs, please e-mail Mrs. Staniszewski ([email protected]) with your availability for after school rehearsals. Starting dates for rehearsals will be announced in the next few weeks. If you do not e-mail, it will be assumed you have no conflicts any days for after school rehearsals. SCHS Bands to NYC 2017! The Stoney Creek HS Band Program was selected by Manhattan Concert Productions to perform at Carnegie Hall on Monday, April 10th, 2017! This is a very prestigious opportunity for our students, as well as a great opportunity to travel to NYC and have a great time with the band! If you have not yet registered for this trip and would like to do so, please see Mrs. Staniszewski for itinerary and registration information. There is limited space still available! Upcoming Performances/Events: Oct 26: MSBOA District 4 S&E registration forms & money due! (Forms can be found here.) Nov 11: Breaking Winds Quartet performance at Adams HS (9:00-11:30am; excused at 9am to return to class for 5th hour) Dec 9: 5th Grade Concert (Wind Ensemble only, during school day) Dec 14: Winter Band Concert Marching Band This Week's Rehearsals: Monday night 10/24 from 7-8:30pm at the stadium! No more morning rehearsals! We will be getting ready for the Cougar Christmas Medley and our performance with the Detroit Red Wings on November 20th. MB Festival Pictures: Group picture order forms/envelopes are available in the band room on top of the mail box. Upcoming Performances: (Click links for each event's timeline): Nov 20*: Red Wings Performance *Please note: This is a required performance. Bus transportation for the Red Wings is available ONLY for those students NOT attending the game after performing. Also, there will be NO truck for this performance (much like Arts & Apples). Dec 4: Rochester XMas Parade (Timeline TBD) Concerts & Opportunities MSBOA District 4 HS Honors Bands The District 4 MSBOA Honors Bands are now accepting director nominations! The event will take place at Waterford Kettering HS on January 6 and 7, 2017, and will feature guest conductors Ken Thompson (Concert Band I), and Damien Crutcher (Concert Band II). Students will be selected from the pool of those nominated based on past Solo & Ensemble ratings in addition to director recommendation. The participation fee (which covers shirt, meals, mailings, guest directors stipends, etc.) is $60/student, if selected. This is a great opportunity to work with some fantastic conductors and students from other schools in our area! If you would like to be nominated, please let Mr. DeRubeis or Mrs. Staniszewski know no later than Monday, October 31st. Ongi Suono Saxophone Duo Saturday, October 29, 2016 (FREE ADMISSION!) Masterclass at 4 p.m. in Varner Hall, Room 134, Oakland University Performance at 8 p.m. in Varner Recital Hall, Oakland University Ongi Suono Saxophone Duo presents New Music for Two Saxophones. Noa Evan of Kent State University and Phil Pierick from the Eastman School of Music formed Ogni Suono in 2009 to expand and promote contemporary music for saxophone duos. They collaborate regularly with composers and other performers, presenting diverse programs to a wide range of audiences across the United States and abroad. MSU Double Reed Instrument Day Experience a full day of Double Reeds at Michigan State University Saturday, November 5, 2016, 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., MSU Music Building Michigan State University oboe and bassoon professors Jan Eberle and Michael Kroth invite you to attend a day of master classes, workshops, vendors and a double reed choir. Workshop topics include fundamentals, tonguing and audition strategies. A fee of just $10 will also include lunch and refreshments. Open to oboists and bassoonists, family/friends, band directors and music lovers of all kinds. Vendors will be on the premises for double reed products and display.
