We are already halfway through November! With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we look ahead to our DSO trip (Dec 2) the Cougar Marching Band looks ahead to the Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade (Dec 4), and our Winter Band Concert (Dec 15th). We also have some deadlines coming up this week -- all the details are here in this week's Update: Concert Ensembles (CB, SB, WE) Concert Uniform Check: Tuesday, November 15 All Concert Ensemble students (Concert, Symphony, and Wind) need to bring in their Concert Blacks on Tuesday, November 15th to ensure proper fit before our upcoming Winter Concert and Composite Photos are taken in December. If you/your student needed to exchange for different sizes, all exchanges will also be addressed at this time. Large Brass and Large Percussion Ensembles Both large ensembles will be meeting this week. A reminder that all participating students must attend all rehearsals for their chamber music project selection, or they may be required to leave the group/make a different selection.

Band Composite Pictures: Friday, December 16th The SCHS Bands, both Concert and Marching, are tentatively planning to have our Band Portraits taken on Friday, December 16th. Students will need all their uniforms that day, Concert Blacks and Marching, in order to have their portraits taken for our composites. Marching students should also plan on turning in their marching uniforms immediately after their portraits are taken on this day. Individual students/families will also be able to order picture packages of their own portraits, as well as prints of our large composites. More details will be announced as they are confirmed. Community Service Lessons Students, please consider signing up to be a HS mentor for a Hart MS Band student! Mentors will give 30 minute private lessons to MS musicians through the school year, and it's a great way to share a love of music as well as earn NHS Hours, Key Club points, community service hours for scouts, and more. Cougar Marching Band Upcoming Dates: Monday, Nov 14: Leadership @ 5pm, Rehearsal 6-9PM (Cougar Christmas Medley) Monday, Nov 28: Rehearsal 6-9PM Sunday, Dec 4: Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade (Timeline TBA) The CMB will meet this Monday, November 14th, beginning with Leadership at 5pm (all are welcome), and followed by rehearsal at 6pm. Drum majors will be distributing music for the Cougar Christmas Medley and begin working on marching/rehearsing for the Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade to happen in early December. Cougar Jazz Band Our Cougar Jazz Band will be kicking off our season with our annual Jazz Band Retreat at the Embassy Suites in Troy on January 27-29, 2023! Be sure to mark your calendars for this awesome weekend filled with fun and music, and stay tuned for registration information and details as they are confirmed. If you're looking to be in our rhythm section and just can't wait to jam, there's a great opportunity coming up for you! The 2nd Annual 2022 Western Michigan University Jazz Rhythm Section Day will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10th, 9am-3pm. This FREE event is a great opportunity for guitar, piano, bass and drums students to join other students from around the state to explore rhythm section concepts with the WMU jazz faculty. Student Leadership Meetings Students, please mark your calendars- we'd love to have your voice in the meetings! All are welcome, and those seeking a leadership role are very highly encouraged. On November 17, we will hold auditions again for any students that might not have been able to audition due to marching band schedules or are just now deciding they might want to be part of a youth orchestra program. We will offer prorated tuition and need-based tuition aid. Click here for more information. Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition The Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the 2022-2023 Young Artist Competition to be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023. The winner(s) will receive the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra the evening of May 5, 2023 and an award of $500. Interlochen Arts Camp are also providing various scholarships for all participants. The competition is open to band or orchestral applicants between the ages of 12-18 years.
