Concert Ensembles (CB, SB, WE) Wind Ensemble Auditions Congratulations to all those who auditioned! Results will be posted once all auditions have been completed. Spring Band Concert: May 3 We are looking forward to performing for an audience for our culminating performance as a department coming up this week on Wednesday, May 3rd! Students need to report to the Auditorium Stage by 5:30pm for a brief Megaband rehearsal before doors open to the public. Please click to see our Timeline for more details about our Spring Concert. We are also looking forward to celebrating with our audience after our performance with one last Afterglow for this concert! Be sure to bring a nut-free treat to share with everyone. Treats can be dropped off in the auditorium prior to our megaband rehearsal. Spring Band Banquet: May 10 Our Annual Spring Banquet is quickly approaching! This year's banquet will be held at Twin Lakes Golf Course (455 Twin Lakes Drive, Oakland, MI). Jazz Band and Lab students need to arrive at 4:45pm to set up our performance area. Doors for everyone else will open at 5:30pm. Dinner will be served at 6pm, with our awards celebration to follow. Senior Surveys need to be completed for our Band Banquet! Please complete and turn in to Mrs. Staniszewski by May 9th. Click here for Senior Surveys! Chamber Music Night: May 15 We are once again hosting a combined chamber music concert with our Hart MS band friends on Monday, May 15th. ALL SCHS Band students are required to perform at this event for at least one event. (Portfolio students will be performing their selections they have been working on throughout the year; S&E students may choose one of their events to share; Jazz Lab and Band students will be performing at the end of the night.) We invite you to bring your favorite picnic blanket and lawn chair and join us for a beautiful night filled with music from our student musicians! Food trucks will also be available thanks to our SCHS Music Boosters. Students will need to sign up for slots for their performances. Please sign up for your time according to the number of minutes you will need to perform. (One slot = one minute; if 4 minutes are needed, students will need to sign up for 4 consecutive time slots.) SCHS Bands 2025 Travel Survey Cougar Jazz Band Monday night rehearsals resume MONDAY! We have a number of performances in the next couple weeks-- looking forward to getting the BANDS back together! Jazz Band (not lab) at Honors Convocation May 4 (Timeline) Jazz Band & Lab at Spring Band Banquet on May 10 (report to Twin Lakes at 4:45pm) Jazz Band & Lab at Chamber Music Night on "The Hill" at SCHS on May 15 (report to SCHS Band room at 7:30pm) Cougar Marching Band All drumline members, those applying for a Leadership Position in the CMB, and all incoming freshmen seeking to march should be enrolled in both a core band class (Concert, Symphony, or Wind Ensemble) and Marching Band for the coming school year. Leadership Auditions and Interviews If you are a returning member of the Cougar Marching Band for 2023-2024 and are interested in a leadership position within the CMB, our leadership interviews will be held on Monday May 8th and Monday May 15th. A leadership application and essay must be submitted to Mrs. Staniszewski the Friday prior to your interview on your respective Monday. Please reserve spots prior to 3:30pm for percussion candidates. Our drop in clinics have begun in anticipation of auditions happening later in the spring! 2023-24 packets for both our frontline and drumline can be found here: Frontline Packet Drumline Packet MB Mini-Camp Our MB kick-off for the 2023-24 season will be June 7-9th, from 11am-4pm! Be sure to mark your calendars! All marchers for the coming season are required to attend. We will be distributing music, reviewing marching techniques, and more! Student Leadership Meetings Our Final Leadership Council Meeting for the school year will be held on June 5th (2:30pm); newly appointed leadership roles will be discussing plans for the summer and into our fall marching season. Those newly appointed or renewed in their leadership roles are required to attend, but ALL are welcome! Fundraisers RaiseRight card program This is our primary source of SAF fundraising this year! RaiseRight will be running several specials, especially near the holiday season. Their biggest discount days are called Raise Days and they are Thursday and Friday of this week. Extracurricular Opportunities GRAMMY Camp® - Weekend is a one-day non-residential music industry experience over three weekends where a small group (20-30) of high school students can gain an introduction to the business of music. These are FREE for students wishing to attend. The Detroit area GRAMMY Camp – Weekend program is an event that takes place on Saturday, May 6th and Saturday, May 13th from 10am-4pm at the Detroit Hispanic Development Center (1211 Trumbull, Detroit, MI 48216). Each weekend date will feature two different career tracks, and you can attend one or both, but it is not mandatory to go to both. We will also offer a special music industry professional panel on Saturday, May 20th with guest professionals working in the field, who will share their experiences and partake in a Q&A session with the students. In the heart of midtown Detroit, students will study with some of the top local jazz musicians and perform a concert at Aretha's Jazz Cafe for family and friends. New student audition signup is now available on our website HERE. More information about OYO auditions can be found here. From The Top Podcast seeks Young Musicians from Rochester! From the Top, a music nonprofit organization most widely known for its radio program on NPR. From the Top will be recording a radio show in Michigan during their 2023-2024 season featuring young musicians from around the state, and is looking for Rochester Community Schools musicians apply to take part in our Fellowship, which includes the radio (and podcast) recording. What is From the Top? From the Top is a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating the stories, talents, and character of young classically-trained musicians ages 8-18. Selected students will take part in our Fellowship, which includes recording for our NPR radio program and participating in virtual workshops with their peers that explore career opportunities in the arts, audio production, community engagement, and more. Apply at: apply.fromthetop.org Also, for any dedicated young musicians with financial need who are in need of funds to support their musical growth (such as by making it possible for them to purchase their own instrument, take regular private lessons, or attend a summer music program), From the Top also offers the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award, a need-based award of up to $10,000 given in conjunction with full participation in From the Top’s Learning and Media Lab Fellowship.
