We are ramping up and preparing for an exciting festival season for all our student musicians! Here is everything going on in the band room this week and the weeks to come:
Leadership Meeting We will be having our next band leadership meeting on Monday, February 7th, 4-5pm in the band room, before Jazz Band. During our leadership meetings, we discuss how we can best serve ourselves, each other, our bands, and our community. All students are highly encouraged to attend, particularly those who are interested in being more active participants and those who may seek leadership positions within the bands in the future! Music Booster Scholarships: February 24, 2022 The SCHS Music Boosters will once again offer scholarships to students continuing in a band, orchestra, or choir class for the 2022-23 school year. Those interested in a scholarship will need to prepare an audition to perform on February 24th, sign-up for an audition time between 3-6pm in the band room, and complete a letter of intent (click here). Travel Update: May 20-22, 2022 Thank you to all those who completed our travel survey! Based on the survey results, the SCHS Bands will be offering a short (2 night) trip to Chicago on May 20-22, 2022. During this trip, we will be hearing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as well as the Broadway touring production of Fiddler on the Roof, whie exploring many of the other arts and leisure offerings in the Windy City. This trip will be open to all SCHS Band students & adult family members as chaperones. Stay tuned for more details! Jazz Band Jazz Band rehearsals continue this week on Monday evening, Wednesday and Thursday Mornings. At this point, any students with schedule conflicts must have submitted them in writing to Mrs. Staniszewski, particularly for our performances for State Jazz Festival (March 24) and at Music Hall (April 12). Please click here to review our Jazz Band Syllabus and Calendar for Winter/Spring 2022 Additional Jazz Opportunities The Michigan Jazz Festival has started an All-Star High School Jazz Band that will perform a set at this year's Festival on July 17th. There are two rehearsals in weeks before at Wayne State and a day-of dress rehearsal. The virtuosic jazz trombonist and Wayne St. prof. Vincent Chandler will be conducting the group. If you are interested in participating, please let Mrs. Staniszewski know. There is no cost. The MSU-Detroit's Community Music School has an excellent jazz program with an incredible faculty of Detroit's best player / educators that work with high school students IN-PERSON on Wednesday nights, instructing combos and big band with classes jazz improvisation, musicianship, theory, and other subjects. This is a great way to get some extra solo and improv supplemental instruction in preparation of MSBOA Jazz, festivals, and general improvement. Institutes are designed for students considering studying these areas in college and for those seeking to connect with SMTD’s renowned faculty. Participants hail from all parts of the United States as well as internationally.
