Our next round of performances happen this week as we join forces with the Hart MS bands for our Pre-Festival Concerts! Timelines for these performances, as well as newly announced MSBOA Band Festival details, TAC Jazz Festival information and more can all be found in this week's update: SCHS Music Booster Scholarship Auditions! Monday, February 26, 2024 Any and all students who will be enrolled in a band, orchestra, or choir class in the SCHS Music Department for the 2024-2025 school year are invited to audition for our annual Music Booster Scholarships! Our Boosters have multiple scholarships to award that can be used for any events that will enhance musical skills such as private music lessons, summer music camps outside of those provided by the school (such as Blue Lake or Interlochen). To apply and schedule an audition, please see this Music Booster Scholarship Registration Packet. Letters of intent are due Thursday, February 15th! Concert Ensembles (CB, SB, WE) Pre-Festival Concerts: Feb 14 (CB&SB) & Feb 15 (WE) Our next set of performances will be on February 14th (Concert Band and Symphony Band) and February 15th (Wind Ensemble) for our Pre-Festival Concerts! Please make sure your calendars are marked. For our February 14th concert, we will be hosting an afterglow for our Hart 8th Grade Bands, so please be sure to also bring a nut-free goodie to share! February 14 Timeline: 8th Grade, Concert Band, Symphony Band February 15 Timeline: 7th Grade, 8th Grade, Wind Ensemble MSBOA Band Festival Performance Times Announced! Our official MSBOA performance times have been announced-- this year, MSBOA Band Festival will be held right here at Stoney Creek HS for all bands. The Concert Band will perform immediately after school on Thursday, March 7th. The Symphony Band will perform on Saturday, March 9th at 8:50am. The Wind Ensemble will be performing twice- once as a band and again to join with our string orchestra to perform as a full Symphony Orchestra. The Wind Ensemble's first performance will be at 10:55am on Saturday, March 9th. The Symphony Orchestra performance will also be on Saturday, March 9th, at 2pm. Please click here to see further details for all SCHS Bands MSBOA Band Festival Performances. Cougar Jazz Band There will be NO Jazz Band on Monday, February 12th and Monday, February 19th. Our Jazz Band students will be having a clinic with bassist MSgt Eric Sabo from the President's Own United States Marine Corp Band on Monday, February 26th! We are very excited to have MSgt Sabo talk to and work with our jazz students on improvisation and jazz skills during our evening rehearsal that night. Parents are welcome to come sit in on this clinic if they wish- please email Mrs. Staniszewski to RSVP. The Cougar Jazz Band will head to Hastings, MI on April 26-27th, 2024 to perform at the Thornapple Arts Council Jazz Festival! (https://thornapplearts.org/jazzfest/) This performance was added to our syllabus for this year to take the place of MSBOA Jazz Festival. The festival itself has a remarkable reputation for supporting many different age groups, experience levels, and providing an exceptional educational experience for all those involved. More information about this performance can be found at the links below: TAC Jazz Festival Information TAC Jazz Festival Permission Slip Detroit Symphony Orchestra Field Trip: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2024 We have an exciting invitation for a field trip to the DSO- Orchestra Hall to enjoy a classical music concert, Elgar and Sheherazade, featuring Mendelsson’s Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor and Sherherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov. Tickets are $27.00 and include the concert ticket and transportation. Please fill out the ticket worksheet and permission slip and return to the black mailbox ASAP to reserve your seat! Extended deadline until February 6 due to snow days! Parent chaperones are encouraged to attend as we are in need of you! Our next leadership meeting will be Monday, February 26th at 4pm! Leadership Meetings dates for the rest of this year will be: April 8th (2:30pm), May 6th (4:00pm), and June 3rd (2:30pm). Students, please mark your calendars- we'd love to have your voice in the meetings! The student leadership teams have been busy working on projects for the band program! We hope you can join us for some of these new events: The Outreach Committee is working on putting together pep band for the Crosstown Showdown on Friday, February 16th! Our Publicity and Social Committees are working with our SCHS Music Boosters to host our first ever Music Department Bowling Night on Tuesday, March 19th at Avon North Hill Lanes. Cost is $5/person and includes bowling, shoes, and pizza. At least one person per lane needs to be an adult. Registration forms can be seen/printed here. Money and registration forms are due March 8th, 2024 and can be turned in to the black mailbox outside the band or choir office doors. Extra-Curricular Opportunities CMU Saxophone Day: February 25, 2024 The School of Music at Central Michigan University is hosting an exciting Saxophone Day on Sunday, February 25 at the CMU School of Music. Saxophone Day 2024 will feature performances by the CMU Saxophone Studio, with an opportunity for high school students to rehearse and perform in a large saxophone ensemble, plus attend a recital of new literature by our special guest artists, the fabulous ~Nois Saxophone Quartet. The cost to participate is $10 per registrant. This fee will be collected at check in, payable by cash or check only. Checks need to be made payable to Central Michigan University. Social Studies Olympiad: Song Writing Stoney Creek High School will be competing in the Social Studies Olympiad this year, and one of the events is to create an original song! Detroit Summer Jazz Workshop The Detroit Summer Jazz Workshop is currently accepting applications for our July 8-12 2024 instrumental workshop at the MSU Center and vocal camp at Music Hall, both in Midtown Detroit. We offer weeklong jazz instruction in our morning or afternoon workshop to all students of all ages above 10, on any instrument, at any experience level. Spots fill up quickly so save yours with a $50 reservation fee on the 'application' page. Whether you want to have a fun and casual experience or are looking to progress to the next steps of your jazz education, we have the top jazz educator/performers in Metro-Detroit that you'll have the opportunity to work with in the heart of jazz-legacy rich historic Detroit.
