All the details are here in this week's Update: JAZZ BAND Cougar Jazz Band at Music Hall: April 2, 2024 We are very excited to once again have the opportunity to perform at historic Music Hall in Downtown Detroit along side the Adams Highlander and Rochester Falcon Jazz Bands on April 2nd, 2024. There are NO other jazz bands in the state that get to do an event like this, and it truly is special for them to play the same stage as Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, and Frank Sinatra. We want to continue this event, and it needs participation for it to happen. The Cougar Jazz Band will head to Hastings, MI on April 26-27th, 2024 to perform at the Thornapple Arts Council Jazz Festival! (https://thornapplearts.org/jazzfest/) This performance was added to our syllabus for this year to take the place of MSBOA Jazz Festival. Payment and forms were due before departing for Spring Break. We are looking forward to a great trip and performance-- be sure to submit your payment and forms ASAP if not already done so! TAC Jazz Festival Permission Slip TAC Jazz Festival Student Packet (Payment, Roommate selection, schedule, etc.) CONCERT ENSEMBLES Congratulations to Jihyo Y- Outstanding MSBOA Soloist! A big congratulations to Jihyo Y. for being honored by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association as an Outstanding Soloist at MSBOA State Solo & Ensemble Festival this past weekend! Jihyo was recognized as one of the best high school flute players across the state of Michigan and has been invited to the Outstanding Soloist Competition at Eastern Michigan University coming up in April. Congratulations and Good Luck! Spring Band Concert Our Spring Concert is coming up on Wednesday, May 1st! Students will need to report at 5:30 pm for a brief combined band rehearsal. Concert dress for this performance is our Concert Blacks. Students will also need to bring a nut-free goodie to share at our Afterglow. Doors will open at 6:30pm, and the concert will begin at 7pm. We hope you can join us for a great evening of live music! Band Banquet: Thursday, May 9th This year's Band Banquet will be taking place on Thursday, May 9th at Twin Lakes Golf Course. Doors open at 5:30pm along with prelude music from our Cougar Jazz Band, prior to dinner being served and our annual awards presentation and celebration of our seniors. Freshmen who marched will receive their varsity letter, our seniors are presented with Graduation Honors Cords (concert ensemble for 4 years), our plaque awards are presented, and much more! We hope everyone can join us for this special evening of music and recognition of all the accomplishments of these students over the duration of this school year. In partnership with Dr. Lamb and the OU Percussion Studio, Adams will be hosting the first RCS Percussion Festival on Saturday, May 11th from 12-6pm. It will feature performances from Dr. Lamb, OU percussionists and RCS percussion ensembles and soloists. The day will include a performance showcase from Dr. Lamb, OU students & alumni, and our RCS Percussion coaches, a masterclass of OU percussionists performing solos and ensemble pieces, and an interactive clinic from Dr. Lamb and move into a solo/ensemble masterclass for RCS students. Any percussion soloists/ensembles are welcome to register for this free event! Chamber Music Night: Monday, May 13, 2024 All students will be performing in our annual Chamber Music Night on Monday, May 13th! Cougar Marching Band Leadership Interviews Interested in applying to be a section leader, captain, or Drum Major for the Cougar Marching Band? Interviews are being held Monday, May 6th and Monday, May 13 after school for those interested in a leadership position for the coming school year. Drum Major Workshops Those interested in applying for the position of Drum Major in the Cougar Marching Band are invited to attend one or all of our Drum Major Workshops! These informational meetings will go over the responsibilities, requirements, and details of the Drum Major position as well as provide the opportunity to ask questions and practice conducting skills prior to leadership interviews in May. Be sure to mark your calendars and join us if interested! Workshops will be held on April 16, 18, and 22nd after school from 2:30-3:30pm. Stoney Creek Percussion Workshops Our Percussion Staff will be hosting informational workshops prior to try-outs this spring-- those interested in both our Frontline and Drumline for the 2024-25 school year are highly encouraged to attend! Drumline Prerequisite: all Drumline members are required to participate in a full year concert ensemble/band class in addition to marching band. This prerequisite only applies to Drumline; Frontline members are welcome to participate with no additional requirement. EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES Michigan Youth Ensembles Applications for the 2024-2025 Michigan Youth Ensemble (MYE) Season are now open! All MYE Programs are open to students who will be in grades 9 through 12 during the 2024-2025 academic year. Social Studies Olympiad: Song Writing Stoney Creek High School will be competing in the Social Studies Olympiad this year, and one of the events is to create an original song! Detroit Summer Jazz Workshop The Detroit Summer Jazz Workshop is currently accepting applications for our July 8-12 2024 instrumental workshop at the MSU Center and vocal camp at Music Hall, both in Midtown Detroit. We offer weeklong jazz instruction in our morning or afternoon workshop to all students of all ages above 10, on any instrument, at any experience level. Spots fill up quickly so save yours with a $50 reservation fee on the 'application' page. Whether you want to have a fun and casual experience or are looking to progress to the next steps of your jazz education, we have the top jazz educator/performers in Metro-Detroit that you'll have the opportunity to work with in the heart of jazz-legacy rich historic Detroit.
