A TUBACHRISTMAS in Lansing this year on Saturday, December 10 performing on the steps of the Michigan Capitol Building!. This would be a great opportunity for your students to either perform in or attend a fairly unique musical event. What is TUBACHRISTMAS? TUBACHRISTMAS is a series of concerts all over the world that brings together low-brass musicians of all ages and skills to perform a free public concert of Christmas Carols arranged specifically for Low Brass ensemble. For each event, performers come together in the hours before the performance to rehearse the selections chosen for that event, then perform for the public. TUBACHRISTMAS is a wonderful opportunity for low brass musicians to be the featured players they don't always get to be, and for other students and the public to hear unique arrangements of some of their favorite holiday music. Who is TUBACHRISTMAS for? TUBACHRISTMAS is open to performers of all ages and skill levels. That said, some of the parts can be challenging, especially in terms of range. High school players should have very little issue with the arrangements, but middle school students may struggle, especially those in their first year of band this year. Players are encouraged to do the best they can, and know that the more experienced players around them will help to make sure everyone sounds great. I can say personally that my daughter -- who just started playing euphonium this fall -- is looking forward to playing as best as she can with us this year, but every student's comfort level in that kind of situation will vary. To help with those beginning students, we've put together some simplified arrangements of the pieces we're most likely to play this year. They are available as PDF downloads at: https://capitalareatubas.org/simplified-parts-download The TUBACHRISTMAS performance is for everyone! It's free, and open to the public. The audience is encouraged to sing along with the carols they know and enjoy the ones they might not know. What do I need for TUBACHRISTMAS? - An Instrument - Tuba and Euphonium/Baritone are the primary instruments, but cousins such as sousaphone, helicon, ophicleide (bass or contrabass), serpent, double-belled euphonium are known to make appearances from time-to-time - To Register - There is a $10 registration fee for performers, who will each receive a commemorative button for the year. Registrations can be paid in cash or card at the event, or ahead of time at https://capitalareatubas.org/store . - An original copy of Carols for a Merry TUBACHRISTMAS. This contains the 34 arrangements that are used in all TUBACHRISTMAS events world-wide (though each event normally has only 12-15 selections). The book is available in 2 sizes 6.5x8" ($20) or 8.5x11" ($25) and in either Bass Clef with all four parts, or in Treble Clef with just the two upper (euphonium) parts. There is a fifth version that has the lower (Tuba) parts in Treble Clef and in both B♭ and E♭, as played in British-style brass bands, but your students would likely not want that option. Books may be purchased at registration or in advance at https://capitalareatubas.org/store - A rag to clean-up water key discharge, and a portable music stand, if possible. We plan on providing stands, but having a spare in case we run out would be helpful. - To dress festively and for the weather. Bright colors, Christmas themes, and decorated instruments are encouraged. We plan to perform outdoors, so dress appropriate for the weather on the day. TUBACHRISTMAS hats, scarves, and headbands will be available for purchase at registration (or again, for pre-order at https://capitalareatubas.org/store ) What are the details for Lansing's TUBACHRISTMAS? - Registration: 10:00-11:00 AM; St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 218 W Ottawa St, Lansing - Rehearsal: 11:00 AM-12:00 PM; St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 218 W Ottawa St, Lansing - Performance: 1:00 PM; Michigan Capitol Building East Steps, 100 N Capital Ave, Lansing Parking is available at the Roosevelt Parking Ramp, 220 Seymour Ave, Lansing. If poor weather would prevent us from playing outside, we will perform at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. We are already halfway through November! With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we look ahead to our DSO trip (Dec 2) the Cougar Marching Band looks ahead to the Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade (Dec 4), and our Winter Band Concert (Dec 15th). Large Brass and Large Percussion Ensembles Both large ensembles will be meeting this week. A reminder that all participating students must attend all rehearsals for their chamber music project selection, or they may be required to leave the group/make a different selection.
